Hi and welcome to BBallSuccess! My name is Coach Justin Rake, Chicago basketball coach/trainer.
Here’s a little bit about my history playing the game. I started basketball around 10 years old where my step-dad and I would go to the YMCA near my home in Naperville, IL to practice shooting and basketball fundamentals. We moved to Mandeville, LA when I was 12. I played AAU basketball in the summer; and played my high school ball at St. Paul’s School in Covington, LA. My senior year I averaged 22 points and earned conference MVP and All-State Honorable Mention recognition.
After graduation I attended Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, ME playing under New England Hall of Fame Coach Whit Lesure, and helped our team win the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) championship.
I then walked on at Division I Louisiana Tech University. Although my freshman year didn’t yield much playing time, I learned a lot working with guys that had NBA aspirations (many of them currently playing overseas or in the NBA development league). My sophomore year I was offered a scholarship to play Division II basketball at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, where I would finish my college career.
Since returning to Illinois I’ve taken the lessons learned from my playing experiences to coach and train boys and girls of all ages and levels first at the Chicago Bulls/Sox Academy; now at Illinois Speed beginning its 15U AAU boy’s program and as assistant girl’s coach at Immaculate Conception Catholic Prep in Elmhurst.
